Hey guys, i'm new to this forum . I have an 02 s crew cab with a 5.4 . I tow a travel trailer and would like to get a little better umph on the hiway. I was thinking about going with a catback system, but i'm not after sounds, (stock sound is fine with me). I need the power from about 1500 to 2500 rpm. Would a single 3 inch exhaust be best? And what muffler would ya'll suggest so as to not increase the sound much? thanks in advance. Oh, by the way, this is my first ford product i have owned and i assure you it will not be the last, the wife and I both love our truck!!
If you want a performance muffler that's also relatively quiet, consider the Hooker Aero Chamber. Do a Google search and you'll find loads of info on them. I got mine from Summit; about $60.
Don't go overboard on pipe size, since you're looking for towing torque. For rpms up to 2500, I'd stay with the stock diameter. Exhaust gas cools and contracts as it flows toward the rear, so you don't need a large pipe. A relatively smaller pipe will keep the exhaust gas velocity up, and therefore the torque.....
The Gibson swept side system is a good system. It is quiet in the cab, but has a nice low rumble at the tailpipe. The first time I heard it when a friend did a drive by, I couldn't believe it was my truck because it is sounds much quieter inside. Under acceleration it offers a bit of a growl, but not overbearing. I have one on my Ranger, and I've sen other FTE members talk about how they like theirs on their 5.4s. Gibson advertises low RPM power gains like you are looking for. I'm not sure how it compares to the competition, but I did notice an improvement pretty much at all RPM's. The system is an easy do it yourself install. The hardest part is to get the old system off.
see my other post in this forum. it sounds to me like you're a prime candidate for the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. however, I can't comment on "extra oomph". Seat of the pants, it feels a little more snappy but that could just be because I was hoping it would. You know, mind tricks. But I think the sound would be right up your alley. For what it's worth, I stayed with the stock 2.5" dia piping, too. Actually, I simply replaced my stock muffler with this one and added some pipe to make up the difference in length.
I'm running a catback Borla system on my truck, I noticed a slight increase in horsepower. I have the 2003 F150 Supercrew with the 5.4L engine. It isn't very much louder at all unless you stomp on it and get the RPMs screaming. Just cruising down the highway you cant even tell its not stock, from inside the cab. From outside, it just sounds a little deeper. On top of that, the dual out stainless steel tips look pretty sweet
