no second gear

a funny thing happened while i was changing the strainer in my C4 tranny. i noticed the intermediate band adjustment nut was really loose. i adjusted it as per the instructions in my chiltons manual ( or at least i thought i did). now my tranny doesn't want to shift out of first gear
if anyone knows the proper way to to make the adjustments, PLEASE help me

thanx
mike

Intermediate/front band: tighten to 120in lbs back off 1 3/4 turns.
Reverse/rear band: tighten to 120in lbs back off 3 turns.

that's the way i tried to do it. when i tightened the adjusting screw (my book says 10 ft. lbs.) and backed it off there were barely enough threads to put the locknut on. that's when i lost 2nd gear.
the whole thing started b/c there was some minor slipping in 2nd gear. i thought a new strainer might help.

You band and drum are burnt up. If the drum and band are both burnt then if you adjust it per the service manual, you will loose 2nd gear. Re-adjusting the band to make second work is only a temporary fix.
