Duh? I've never really figured it out, but then I've never really asked before. My rig has the 4x4 (2002F350) on the bed... what does the FX4 on the bed represent?
My uneducated guess would be a cool way of "off road package" It can be interpreted a few ways, literally- EFF-EX-FOUR, which is how i have heard salesman call it. Or Four-by 4, or Ford-by-Four.
it is the designation for the off road package on the newer trucks it includes upgraded shocks, skid plates for the x-fer case and fuel tank, steering damper, and of course the FX-4 decal....$225.00 option

The marketing would lead you to believe that you get more than this, but you don't. There was a discussion on this topic over in the Super Duty forum and some folks were under the false impression that you get a lift and upgraded springs.
I wondered about that, since on my 2002 I got the skid plates etc. but I did NOT get the FX4 decal (mine is clearly "4x4" in big letters, then in little letters "off road"). Dang. I paid the price, but didn't get the tatoo. Well, maybe a little tatoo. Would it be correct for me to understand then, that this FX4 designation began in '03?
There are two things that strike me funny. I have an 02 4x4 off road. it has the steering damper and skit plates but like mentioned above i didn't get the FX4 badge or logo. I'm not upset a bit, I like plain old 4x4 to tell you the truth. I'm not sure if it was actually a copy cat of chevy's Z-71 because they did'nt offer it, or I never saw one in a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup. Seems the z-71 was reserved for the half ton trucks????? Anyway, you didn't get shortchanged, they are the same trucks based on mine compared.
well that would explain my case, but still I don't think there is a difference between the two, and thats to say FX4 didn't actually replace 4x4, I guess you guys with the 03's and later would know better than I..
"4x4" is on 4 wheel drive trucks. "off road" was an option package thru 2002 than it became FX4 in 2003. the FX4 package has shocks made by rancho the older off road package used the same shocks as the standard 4X4 other than that they are the same
Yea I like my little 4x4, off-road logo better than the FX4 decal on the '03 and newer trucks and they can keep the cheesy rancho stock painted shocks - not like they are RS 9000's or anything.
