Question I6 300 Redline Question....

I have a question about the I6 300 redline, I have a 1978 Ford F-100 with a 3 speed on the column and an I6 300. The problem that I am having is, it is so hi geared that when i flip from 2nd to 3rd it lugs it way down and makes it really difficult to get up to speed on the freeway, I have been revving it to about 45 Mph in second which is about 3000 RPM's. I am just curious if I could rev it much more without doing any engine damage, everything is stock on it right now but the exhaust and air intake. Thanks...

I've had my '89 300 up to 5000 RPM with no ill effects. Past 3800 didn't seem to make much difference though, it just rattled a little more and didn't seem to gain any speed.

I run mine up to 4000 at least 15 times a day and it's got over 230K and it hasn't blowen up yet, but the most I've tooken it up to was 5000 squealing tires. I run er up tyo at least 3800 if I was you.

Wow thats the higher you guys get yours? Mine revs out at about 7700 with little or no effect whatsoever. Ok so I'm lying, but 3500-3800 is a good RPM for the motor.

Taking it past 3500 or so is pointless, because the engine doesn't make any real torque that high anyway.

But it does sound cool, doesn't it?

That depends on your definition of cool

It sounds a bit like a diesel with all the valves rattling, that's kinda cool I guess.
