Question Auto Transmission Problem

Good day,

I have a 1997 Ranger, with 99,634 on the odometer. It has a 2.3L motor and automatic transmission. The transmission fluid is good and the levels are fine

When the truck is cold, it takes about 30-45 seconds for it to go into reverse and does so with a slight "ka-thunk". When driving cool it usually does one of three things...

1. The motor revs high and the "O/D Off" light comes on and the overdrive drops out.
2. The motor revs high and eventually slides into overdrive.
3. The "Check Engine" light comes on and the problem completely stops. The light will go off after about 20 miles of driving and the problem will occur again.

If I have driven 30-plus miles, it drives perfect.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have auto-zone check for codes, even if the cel isn't on you could get PENDING codes. But try to pull the codes when the light is on.my 95 model did a simular thing, while excellorating it would be like you shifted into neutral, and reved the engine, then when the rpm's came down it would catch in gear, plus the 3-4 shift was like one shift,bam-bam,turns out it was the throttle possition sensor.Low sensor output was telling the trans. that the engine was idleing.

Thanks - sounds like it is less than a new transmission. I am going to have it checked as soon as that light comes on again.
