I have a 97 f350 psd.Recently when starting it sounds and acts kinda like it is running backwards. After switching off and restarting it dies several times before idling. It has 132,000 on it ,I changed the glowplug relay over the winter and the cam sensor also. The "wait to start"light doesn't stay lit very long. Any suggestions? Oh yea, any way to adjust clutch pedal? thanks Darryl
The clutch is not adjustable because it is hydralic. Sometimes the pedal bushings wear out, they are cheap and not too bad to replace. If you have not changed the glowplugs in 132k, then I would try that first, on the powerstrokes the gp's are controlled by the pcm if I am not mistaken.
Bad Glow plugs will cause the glow plug timer to change duration. I found this out the hard/expensive way.
Also, the clutch can be adjusted if you have or install an aftermarket adjustment rod. It connects between the clutch peddle and the master cylinder plunger. I had the same problem here about about 2 months ago.

You won't always notice it when you are running it, just when you are starting it. The foamy fuel has a chance to seperate into fuel and air, then the injectors get a dose of air at first. I believe there is also a valve at the back of the heads to keep some fuel in the head. If the valve fails, then it allows the fuel to drain back. Same if the transfer pump leaks back, hard to start. Transfer pumps have also been known to crack and suck air on them I heard, so that's something to think about.
