Empty reservoir?

Upon cleaning my truck up this weekend, I noticed something I found a bit strange. I have a 93 ranger xlt 2.3 4cyl 5-spd, and under the hood on the drivers side is a reservoir. On top it says something to the extent of "fill to step with DOT 3 brake fluid." Well, the thing is bone dry. I've had no recent problems with the truck, but the idea of a dry reservoir is sort of intimidating. Is this thing for my brakes or clutch? It's right behind the firewall. Sorry if this is a newbie question. Any advice appreciated!

Chances are it's the clutch cylinder. If this is the case, it should be a shaped like a soup can w/ one line coming off it going down to the bell housing. the only other resivior under the hood that takes Dot3 is your brake master cylinder. It is on the front of the brake booster on the driver side under your hood. If it were empty you would notice. Anyway, you should fill it to the fill line cause if you let it go long enough you will get an air bubble in the system making it difficult to disengage the clutch.
