I just noticed an annoying whine coming from the rear end (diff) of my truck?
I checked all the fluid ecept the diff fluid and everything else looks good.
Could it be that the diff fluid needs to be changed or might a bearing be going?
I have owned many, many ford vehicles. All of which had some sort of rear-end whine. My Excursion does not whine though. First ford I have owned that has not. I attributed that to the super thick synthetic gear oil in the rear end (75w-140 synthetic). Have you had the truck since brand new?
If not, i would try changing it. Someone may have dumped the factory fluid and assumed the rear-end took 90w like most all other rear-ends do.
Ford switched to a fully synthetic multi-grade gear oil with the introduction of the newer limited slip rear-ends a few years back and it is VERY expensive, about $19/quart.
If you do change out the fluid make sure you add the limited slip additive, these rear-ends have clutches and they are prone to chatter and whine.
