I have a 99 f150 with a 5.4l v8 with several mods. dual 3inch exhaust with a magnaflow dual in dual out muffler, gibson headers no cat back converters with simm o2 sensors in the rear to fool the computer, an airaid intake, mass airflow sensor, 75mm throttlebodie and a throttlebodie spacer. Many of these require special programming for a chip, with the gas prices right now I cant afford to fill up with premium so I was thinking about getting a dual stage diablo chip, one stage programmed with all the mods for premium octane and the other for all the mods with regular or super octane. My question is with the programming for regular or super octane with special programming for all the mods would I see any gas mileage improvements or hp improvements? When the gas prices go down I would use the other stage for premium octane to get the best performance out of the chip. Let me know.
What you're looking for is a three stage chip, not a two stage. A Diablo Delta chip always has one setting as the stock tune (its the chip's off position). The premium fuel program yields the most horsepower, and usually an increase if you can keep your foot out of the throttle.
So here's the config:
1 - stock
2 - custom tune, 87 octane, for your modifications.
3 - custom tune, premium fuel, for your modifications.
I think Ken meant to include "MPG" before the word increase. I am getting a good 1-2 mpg better with my chip running premium. I did the math and I am actually coming out ahead in cost per mile running premium. You do have to keep your foot out of it though or you won't notce the better mileage, which I guess kinda defeats the purpose of a chip, but at least you have the extra power there when you need it.
The higher the gas prices, the more parity you get in the operating fuel costs
of the vehicle,
plus the bonus of more power. Once the price gets over a certain amount,
it costs less to operate with the chip (this is assuming you don't have a lead foot,
which will negate the mileage benefits of more power). The lower your stock mileage,
the quicker the pay off.
Guys who get 13-15 stock mileage may spend a lot less money on gas
with a premium tune with current prices."
