The A/C compressor on my 94 explorer will not engage. There is no power going to the compressor clutch. The system has refrigerant - it didn't leak out of the system over the winter. When I hook up a can of R134 it does not drain into the system, so I feel that isn not the problem. I checked all relays and fuses. Is there any additional diagnosis I can do to try to narrow down the problem? I don't want to break into the system replacing parts until I have a good idea of which part(s) are to blame.
I had this problem once before on a system that was completely drained. The problem was that the compressor would not engage if the pressure was too low, and you had to jumper a harness somewhere to get it to engage "dry" so that it would accept the refill bottles. Is the system completely drained right now? That might explain it. Also, the Haynes manual has some wiring diagrams in the back if that's not the answer and you want to try to test continuity.
There is no power going to the compressor. The system does have refrigerant - I hear it leak when I depress the stopper in the low pressure fitting. Thought that I might need to replace a switch but wanted to get comfirmation before breaking into the system.
Yes, system might have some pressure. But if the pressure is not enough, the A/C electric clutch will not engage. You should check the pressure with manometer to be sure. If system's pressure is in appropriate limits you might want to check pressure sensor.
Also, are you sure your A/C uses R134? Mine '93 has R12.
Oh, almost forgot. The label saying amount (weight) and type of refrigerant is located on evaporator's case. This is round-shaped object covered with alluminium foil next to the transmission's stick, to the left (if you open the hood and stay near the grille).
Also this sticker might have recommended pressure. But I am not sure about it.
