The "Soup Bowl" is on the inside of the air cleaner assembly on the Early Diesels. When you would open up the air cleaner cover on mine you could not get the lid off because it had a bowl installed that extended down in the center of the housing. So the only way to check the filter was to pull the entire assembly.
This "Soup Bowl" resticts the air flow, and also keeps the noise down. I cut mine out and the throttle response improved, this was even after adding the K&N air filter.
I am not sure about your factory turbo, I believe that it uses a different air induction system. My air cleaner assembly looks like a normal air cleaner housing from back in the 70's. Uses the ole round filter, that drops in with wing nut on top of the cover.

Also, I've been looking into Banks for exhaust systems and will be giving them a call to get some more info.
