The MPG question always seems to bring a wide range of responses. I've seen everything from 13 City to 23 mixed.
Personally I'm driving a 2001 SC 4x4 6 spd and average 18.5 to 19 with mixed city and highway driving. While I don't take it too easy on my rig, I usually don't take off too hard.
When on the open highway pushing speeds of 80, I've noticed a drop down to 17.5/18.
I went through the gas/diesel debate two months ago, ended up with the diesel and have been glad I did every day since.
A diesel will get better MPG every time, the draw backs is they are not quick on take off, and they cost more on the purchase price. But after about 70,000 miles you will ahead. This is considering everything even oil changes.
Just remember run the additive in both the cooling system and fuel system. FW-16 is the coolant additive from Ford. Standadyne makes a pretty good fuel additive. There are many different brands of coolant additive and fuel additives on the market. I recommend using both, mainly the coolant additive. Diesels suffer from cavatation and you can kill a block in as little as 60,000 miles. I know, I purchased mine used at this mileage with cracks in both #2 and #6 cyl.

Diesel engines always seem to get better gas milage due to much higher compression than a gas engine. They make better torque, about the same horsepower a gas engine makes and diesel fuel is usually cheaper than gas, but not much nowadays. A diesel engine should last about twice as long as a gas engine if maintained (everything seems to last longer when properly maintained).
