What's the failure mode for the AOD with a bad/misadjusted TV cable? It seems to me that if you smoked the direct drive clutch it would shift into 3rd or OD, it just wouldn't do anything in that gear but slip; however, it *would* actually shift. At least that's how it seems to me...
The reason I ask is because I have an 86 F150 w/AOD that's *not* shifting into 3rd or OD, and the TV cable is now properly adjusted (and it's shifting into 2nd just fine now). I'm wondering if it's just a screwy valve body or just what the problem is.
Throttle valve, it's the cable that runs from the trans to the throttle body (or carb, depends on what you have) that tells it when and how to shift. It's similar in purpose to a kickdown cable, except that on an AOD it controls up and down shifts and internal pressure.
it could be a couple things
Improper fluid level
damaged or improperly adjusted linkage, low main control pressure, sticking or ditry valve body, broken converter damper hub.
All these make since, but now......I called the Ford dealership here and the detent cable has been discontinued...does anyone know where to get one without going to a junkyard? And also, if I adjust my cable like everyone tells me to, the tranny shifts late meaning the engine tachs out around 4000 rpm before it will shift. Any solutions besides shoot the truck would be appreciated.
Thanks
