What is it.....

and what does it do???? My 02 psd developed a problem last night. I've traced it to a square black box about 2 1/2in big that has a wiring harness plugged into it and it it under the dash mounted on a dash brace just to the left and below of the radio. You can see it if you take the dash fuse panel off. It is to the right of it and you can see it through the opening of the dash brace.

Now for the problem..it makes an annoying sound like a "bug sapper" frying bugs but just pretty much continuous. The only thing that will stop it is to just slighty push on the brake pedal..just enough to light the brake lights. Also if you use the turn signal. it will quit for that time but after that, it's back to making this noise. If I have described this box to you and you know what it is for or what it does. I'd like to know. If I put my hand on this box, you can feel it sapping or for another word, "viberating"

Anyone had somthing like this and I wonder if I get a new box and plugged it in, will this fix the problem? Hate to go to the stealership just to have them give me a bill and tell me all it takes is a new box and plug it in...probably a $100 or so, if you know what I mean. Thanks Might add that all you have to do is have the ignition on..motor doesn't have to be running and everything on the dash works. Will not make the noise if the key is in the acc. position.

it is the plug to the factory wiring harness for a brake controler. the factory plug is the gray one, the black plug will either be pluged into a controller or be tucked behind the dash somewhere. if you dont need a controller you can unplug it and take it out(it sounds like something is wrong with it any how)

This 2 1/2in square box tuned out to be a cover. Under it is a small 1 in square blue box that looks like a relay and it has 5 or 6 spades on it. I unplugged it and that took care of the annoying sound BUT have no brake lights or turn signals or emergency flasher. Is this blue box then what I need? According to wlihntr, this has to do with the brake controller..is this what I ask for at the stealership? I would guess you would call it a brake controller relay Untill I get something, going to have to put up with the noise as I sure need brake lights..do some night driving. Thanks

from your explaination of location it sounds like the brake controller plug, but every thing should work fine with it unplugged it is just a piggy back to the brake system for an outboard controller.. i just went and popped the cover off of my truck, to the right of that opening is a gray plug and a black plug(both outside of the metal frame cut out) then behind those plugs through the cut out in the metal frame is the plug for the brake controller the top part of the plug is gray and the bottom(which plugs into my cotroller) is brown, but could be any color. if you could get a pict of it that would help alot

ok i went back out to the truck with a flashlight and behind the brake controller conection is a lager black plug. so if you dont have a controller plug then that black box would be what you see through that hole. sorry i dont know what that thing is and i hope i never have anyproblems with it brcause i cant see any way i could even get to it.

wlihntr...I see the gray plug you are talking about...right next to it was this cover with this blue square box that must be a relay. I have yet seen this "black" plug you are talking about. Like you said, a person has to be about the right size (small, which I'm not) to get into the right twist to lay on the floor board and then reach up in there to get at it...NOT the easiest! The blue square box has a Ford part number on it so guess I'll take it out at the stealership and see what they call it. Wouldn't think it would be too expensive but who knows...these electrical gadgets can fool you at time. Oh well, we'll see.

From the sounds of it, sounds like it is a flasher relay. Hang on to the one you have when you go to the dealership, if it is buzzing, so to say, it probably is trying to turn on/off from some stray voltage. 12v will turn the relay, 6 or so probably just make it buzz. The only thing I can see from the schematic, which at this point sucks, is a Flasher relay for hazards and a Flasher relay for turn signal. That is for a 99, they may have combined them since. Have you tried to run the part# on some searches to see what it may be?
