I have a 88 F150 w/ 302 and the POS Mazda 5 speed. Well it went out and basicly took every bearing with it. I was wanting to know what options do I have automatic wise, I was thinking of a C4 or C6 because they are a dime a dozen and cheap! They want way to much money for a new M2D5, and I don't have 700 bucks for a remanufactered one, plus I would go ahead and put in a new clutch and pressure plate and bearing which in all would be about 8-900 bucks after that. Is there anything besides flywheel, tourqe con., dipstick and shifter I have to worry about? For the shifter I was thing of the one from B&M for trucks to put in the floor. Another thing, how hard and what would I need to put an AOD in my truck, and finaly has anyone gottin one of these Mazda trany's rebuilt and how much did that run? Right now I'm just looking for the cheapest way out.
Autos are more $$ than the mazda, the reason yours crapped out was due to poor maintenance. Sure the tranny isn't all that great but they last well over 200k with proper maintenance. For a truck i would do a c6 for a heavy duty tranny, but you loose OD, as for AOD, it's just like the c6 and you will have OD but it isn't nearly as beefy as the c6
Well I just got the prices on getting my tranny rebuilt and I think thats what Im going to do. Its going to cost me around 500$ and that's with the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. A friend of mine is going to do the rebuild for me and he knows what he's doing and its FREE!! LOL So I think this is going to be the cheapest way. I would like an automatic because you do get tired of it thru town. I got enough im my budget to have dual exhaust put on and a 250$ Macco paint job, so in the end it will look good and sound good and most of all run good!
