K & N Air Filter

From previous posts it appears that many experienced PSD owners do not feel comfortable inserting a K & N Filter in the stock filter housing. Is that a fair statement? I am on the verge of going back to a stock filter since I drive in very dusty conditions in New Mexico. Any advice?

Go back to the stock filter. Use the search feature in this forum and you'll get a wide variety of opinions. Mine happens to be that K&N is not the best choice.

If you ask anyone on this forum(for the most part) they will tell you that the Tymar setup is by far the best for severe conditions. Alot better than the stock box. As far as k&n, In my opinion I would'nt own one, Just my 2cents.

Air Filters

Well guys, I am sporting the Ford Air Induction System (AIS) and I like it very much. The truck really seems to breathe a lot better, especially when stopped at a traffic light. The acceleration (and I am no lead foot) is very smooth. My truck does not see many dusty roads, but I wanted a filter that allowed the air to flow with practically no restriction.

On the freeway, the response is very snappy when the demand is put upon the engine to accelerate.

Just my .02 cents.

I also have the Ford severe duty AIS on my 01. It gets plenty of air, the filter is huge!

Hey guys, whats exactly wrong with K&N. Thats the only thing i knew what to do when i got my psd. Actually, my truck doesn't even run at the moment, but i did put a K&N filter in. I got them in my motorcycles and thought they were good plus i couuld clean it myself cheaper.

The K&N let's too much dust into the engine. There was a recent thread on a dusted turbo because of a K&N filter. This of it this way, the only way to decrease restriction over the same surface area (such as a K&N drop-in filter) is to use a more porous filter. In doing so, you also let in more dust. This is physics 101. Logic would also say that since K&N builds their filters out of the same material whether it is a dro;-in or intake that they will show the same results. The K&N filters also are prone to pinholing after cleaning. They might be good enough for a gasser, but not a turbo diesel.

Both the Ford AIS and Tymar decrease restriction by increasing the size of the filter element, but also maintaining filtration with a high quality paper filter.

Thanks again john, im still learning. After my last post, i read old posts. I'm still learning computers and websites too. Now, i'm cheap and have already purchased my K&N. Would i be a fool to continue using it if i sealed it off good in the box with grease or something? Also, how much is the Tymar with everything i need?

What year is your truck? The cost of the Tymar depends on year. The setup for the older trucks is different. Send me an email if you have questions.

Since you have already purchased a K&N, I would either return it to the place you bought it or sell it on ebay. Any loss is surely less than that of a new turbo or diesel engine.

LOL. I certainly won't tell my wife you said that. She can barely stand the fact that I like pickups. FYI, that pic was taken when I was unpacking my Tymar intake on the dining room table.
