Question Timing Problem

Hi, Can anyone tell me how to set my timing? I have an '83 F250 with a 6 cyl and it won't start. I have replaced plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor and the only thing left is the timing.(I think anyway) Is there a certain spark plug thats good for this kind of engine? I know just about nothing about engines so simple explanations would be great! Thank You...Dave. .

timing probs

yes it cranks. Tried gas in the carb (also starter fluid) and it almost goes but at that last moment just turns over again.

Dave; You didn’t mention if or not you had checked the ignition module. Unless the distributor has been replaced or moved, you may want to verify that you have any spark at all before you start messing around with the timing.

Pull any of the spark plug wires off and attach it to a spare plug. Lay that plug on the engine block in such a way that the body of the plug is grounded to the engine block and you can see if or not the plug fires. If you observe a healthy spark while trying to start the engine, the ignition module is probably good and verifying the timing is the next appropriate step.

There are several threads in the “inline six” forum that explain how to set the timing close enough to get the engine started.

Good Luck, Let us know what happens.

If it is timming that is the queastion then loosen the distributer have someone crank the truck and som one else rotate the distuibuter back and forth until the truck starts ( you are trying to find the sweet spot that the timming will run right at). After the truck starts then rev the motor a little if it revvs cleaning try reaving a little higher. If you are hearing knocking and pinging the you back dovn a little until you can revv the motor cleanly When you find that spot then turn off the motor and snug down the distrubuter but not too tightly find a steep hill and or heavy load and start out slowly op the hill see of every thing sounds and feels right .
Then go a time or two more to see if the engine is going to knock and ping if it does then back off the distributer a little at a time until ithe sounds stop or if you have smog rules in your area then set the timming to the sticker and forgett it
