Transfer case

I was drivin up a mountain last night to go campin. I had it in 2wd tull it got really steap so i stopped locken in the hubs and put it in 4low because i had 4 people in it and a whole bunch of gear and didnt feel like riding the clutch all the way up. When i went to start i left the parking brake on and when i went to start i hered a big bang from underneath and my bronco is dead on the trail. then i rolled back not knowing what was goin on and cracked the grill on my friends blazer. I looked under and the driveshafts were all set. si i knew it was the transfer case. It works in 2high and 4 high so i must be the gear reduction snapped. How long untill the broken pieces mess up the rest of the transfer case? And do you think i can just get that fixed or will i have to rebuild the whole thing?

Have u tried it again?

It might not have been all the way in gear, maybe just was stuck part-way in.

I've done that in my ranger before

Which transfer case do you have? The BW 1356? It seems like it would be very hard to break the planetary...maybe the shift fork, but I'm not sure if a broken shift fork would still allow use in 2 and 4 hi. Also since it was a loud bang, it doesn't seem like it would be the teeth on the reduction gear...would probably be a grinding sound instead. Either way...you should at least check the fluid for bits of metal and if you see that...take care of it quick. The BW 1356 is the only tcase I know about so if you don't have this...ignor everything I've said.

ya ill try it again, cause after i hered the pop it would just grind but not that loud. IF something is messed up do you think a tranny shop can fix it or should I start looking around at junkyards?

Again...all I know about is the Borg Warner 1356 so if this is yours(I think it is)...a tranny shop would certainly be able to fix it...but depending on how handy you are...might do it yourself. If it's a shift fork, chain, pump, etc...those can be found on ebay. I recently had my 1356 wear through the shift fork due to a bad oil pump. I was able to take it apart, bought the gears and forks I needed and got it all back together with very little trouble. I did that about 3000 miles ago and no problems so far. The parts set me back about 100 bucks for a shift fork, range hub and gasket (just saw a kit on ebay with seals and pump for less )...I can only imagine what a shop would charge. Either way opening it up should be a good way to tell what went wrong. You can certainly shop the junkyards, but you won't know the condition of the internals and you must make sure the output shaft will mate up easily with your drive shaft...Flanged vs U Joint. A new or rebuilt tcase can set you back 500-800 dollars. Good Luck!
