Chrome Emblem Removal

I want to remove the "Twin I Beam" emblems from the fenders of my '66 F250, and would like advice on the best way. Looking up inside the fenders I can see each emblem is attached by two pins passing through the fender metal, but can't tell just how they're anchored. Tried gentle twisting with pump pliers and longnose vise-grips. No go. I'd like to get them off without busting off the pins, but will if there's no other way. Didn't post on the bodywork forum, because maybe this is something unique to Slicks. Thanks for your brainstorms.

usually studded emblems in the 60's cars & trucks used a thing called a barrell clip which fite in the hole, then the studs are aligned, set into the clips and pushed in until the emblem seats against the body metal surface.

To remove the emblems I wire brush pins & barrell clips & lubricate them with light oil, if I can get to them. \Then I push against ends of pins sing something flat & metal, until emblem backs out of clip & off the body surface.

At that point I have to gently & gingerly coax emblem rest of way out from behind it by prying cautiously between body metal & back of emblem. Go slow don't force things be glad for any movement you get and work by going back & forth from one pin to the other.

Replacement Barrell clips are available so if you screw 'em up you can buy new ones.

To add to fbp's comments: I used a pair of plastic bondo applicators to get things started. If you can jam them in enough to loosen the emblem a little you can pry with a screwdriver. Take care to pry against the plastic and only right next to the pins. Save those barrel clips; replacements might be hard to find.

Believe another name for the clips are 'tubular type speed nut, or tubular stud'. If you find it difficult locating them i have purhcased them thru 'restorationspecialties.com'. They have an online catalog. They also have a catalog they will send you. Also purchased the fender and rad support speed nuts, as well as some of the other hard to come by hardware.

good luck,
dave

There are 3 studs....bottom center and outer edges like you see.

Thanks to all for the good info. I'll be putting it to use as soon as I can get in the mood for a long reach into a tight space, with dirt and rust chunks falling in my face. "Restorative" therapy.

As it turns out, the emblems removed easily by gentle prying on the outside; didn't have to go inside the fenders. This was probably because a previous owner repainted the truck then re-used the same barrel clips, making the emblems not a really tight fit the second time around. It worked so well I went ahead and removed both "Custom Cab" emblems, too. Gonna go for a minimalist exterior look. Now in self-debate about the "V8" on the hood.
