I am having the dernd'est time trying to find a new gas cap to replace the one I have now. For some reason, Stant (the major manufacturer of gas/radiator caps) has the part # messed up in their catalog, and the "correct" cap for my application will not fit correctly. All of the local auto parts stores exclusively stock Stant.
Since I have a '74 F-100, my driver's side gas cap is not buried behind a gas door and is visible. It is the type that has an actual "handle" to it bisecting the round cap, as opposed to a cap with ridges around it's edge like a bottle cap.
Anyone else had this issue and how did you resolve it?
i have one of each (dual tanks) and now i am wondering if one of them is wrong.....hmmmmm
not sure about your options to resolve this, other than try another store, or order online from somewhere else, but try to verify it is the one you want before they ship it.
Just an idea thinking back on it I am sure I have ran into this before .
I think that I came up with a quick solution , I started tring some from cars and I think I found one that worked real good ! I do know which one you are
talking about its round and fits the body and has a convex line that runs across it about a 3/4 inch wide some cars have them ( Pinto, Galaxie, and so on, ) on some of these you can un bolt the painted part from the back and bolt it back to match the paint. Hope this helps !
I have a 73 F100 with dual gas tanks and it has one of each type of gas cap. The rear tank is original and it has an original Ford gas cap. The front tank is an aftermarket tank with an aftermarket "bottle cap" style cap. If you are looking for an original Ford gas cap you may be able to find one on a 73-76 Ford truck in a junkyard.
I had the same problem with my 73. I ended up at an auto parts store where the cap in the book didn't fit. Fortunately, the gal behind the counter let me open several packages to fine one that would work right. I wonder why?
