I don't work on engines and my carb needs to be replaced. I was given a quote of $650 by a chain repair shop. I feel like this is too high and certainly out of my range right now. I have ordered the Chiltons repair book to see if this is something a novice can do. I assume it will confuse me. What is a decent price to pay someone to do this replacement. Alternately, Would a Holley book be enough to teach me how to do it myself?
Ouch, yeah that's high. Yes, it's not a hard job to do yourself. In the process of taking off the old one you'll learn enough that the new one should be a snap. Not sure what size and type of carb you what to swap out, but a new Edelbrock or Holley is about $350. Do it yourself and save $300. Even if a shop does it (a different shop than the one that gave you the first quote) it shouldn't be more than 1.5 hrs shop rate. Even with misc. parts like new fuel line the shop shouldn't have more than $100 to add to the cost of the carb.
How do you know it's the carb that needs replaced? Lots of stuff can make your carb look like a bad actor, like vacuum lines, EGR, PCV valves (i.e. cheap to fix).
I had the EGR and PCV valves replaced in Feb. to pass emissions inspection. At that time, the spark plugs were regapped and timing was adjusted. I am going on what I was told by the mechanic who looked at it. We bypassed the manager with the quote to speak frankly, and he seemed like he knew what he was talking about. The symptoms are backfiring, hesitation, especially in 2nd gear. I took it in for a tuneup thinking that new plugs would clear it up, and was told to not change plugs untill the carb was replaced since it will burn out new plugs as is. I climbed up to the engine earlier and it seems fairly straight forward if I attach colored tapes where I dismantle. I know the engine is 4.9. How do I find out what carb is in it now?
