Major AC problem
I own a 1991 Explorer XLT (200,000 miles).
Recently my AC clutch-pulley ground itself to dust. It seemed the clutch plate and compressor were in decent shape just the bearing in the pulley had worn.
Normally I would have changed out the whole unit but I assume I have an R12 system and therefore would have to convert to R134 therefore the whole job would be rather costly. This is the last summer I will run this truck so I opted to replace the pulley only ($100.00 from Ford).
I replaced the pulley two days ago and I don't think the compressor is cycling properly. I get cool air but not cold and yesterday the pulley-clutch unit heated up so much it began to smoke. Not good.
Any idea what may be happening here? I don't even know where to start. It could be mechanical (compressor shaft warped causing wear?) or maybe AC related (cycling on and off too often due to low freon?).
My knowledge of AC systems is limited.
Thanks,
Gil
I think I will get the replacement from a wrecker. If I can get the system discharged at an approved shop I will change it over myself (mechanical installation of the replacement compressor) and then get the shop to convert and recharge R134.
Can I do anything myself on discharge R12 or R134 conversion? All the information I have is that this part of the job is best left to the pros (EPA restrictions etc).
Thanks for your help.
P.S. Marragtop - shims? Only a retaining clip. Did I miss something?
I have had the system discharged and purchased a used compressor. I will have the vehicle converted to R134a at a local shop after I install the unit (it has also been suggested to me to have the shop replace the accumulator).
Is there anything I need to know about installing the compressor? How much oil needs to be added? Which type? Any other pitfalls? Mechanic's secrets?
Any help would be appreciated otherwise I'll pay the extra $100.00 and have it installed at the shop.
Thanks,
Gil
