bad idle

Ok, so the truck runs and all, I just recently finished assembling it. Just a recap, I had an 87 F-150 2X4 fielding truck with the 302. I took the motor out and dissassembled it, and has the parts sent out to be machined. block bored, crank turned, new everything else. Put it all back together and put it in an 89 F-150 4x4 Manual tranny. All things considered it doesnt run too bad. I put the computer from the 87 in the 89 truck as the 89 used to be an inline six. truck idles terribly. it varies from 500 to 1500 RPM. whenever I take it out of gear, the truck dies. pop the clutch a little in third, starts right up and runs, till the next time I take it out of gear. I tried a different computer from an 89 2x4 302, but same problem. tried three different idle air controlers and valves, few different throttle position sensors, and a new O2 sensor. it still does it, infact it got worse when I tried all the new parts. Just more info, both computers I tried sat unplugged from power for more than a month. but both 302 trucks ran fine before I took them apart. All of the wiring harnesses fit, so I am totally stumped as to what could by causing this. Also It seems to be burning very rich. everybody says so when they smell the exhaust, plus I can smell it too. and my fuel consumption is rather high. Any information would be greatly appreciated because I want my truck to run right. Thankyou all.
