lug pattern and steering questions

First of all, I have a 69 Bronco that I purchased 6 months ago. It has 31" tires on it now and they look rediculously small with the suspension lift and the rims are ugly. So I am looking to buy new rims and some 35" tires. There are 5 lugs for each wheel, but the Web site where I was looking at rims has 5x5.5 and 5x4.5 lug patterns listed. Is the 5.5 and 4.5 the distance between the lugs or what? Anyone know which one I would probably have?

Second, when I hit a bump just right, which happens 2-3 times per week, the front of the bronco starts to shake or shimmy, like the steering is bound up or something. To make it stop, I have to jerk the steering wheel real hard in either direction, then it frees up and is fine. The tie-rod ends feel tight, but what else should I look for? I would really like to fix that because sometimes it is scary as hell.

Thanks, Jeremy

As far as your shaking problem- check the track bar bushings for wear first- they are easy and cheap to replace so you might as well change them even if they look ok. My bronco had the same problem years ago except I had to nearly come to a stop to get it to quit. Might also check tire balance too.

that vibration could be caused by a bad steering stabilizer shock. Check into that.
I had that kind of shaking going on and a new stabilizer shock took care of it.

The stabilizer shock will not get rid of the problem- it just covers it up - if everything is ok you shouldnt even need the stabilizer.

My computer was down for a while but got it up now. I will try replacing the track bar bushings and see what that does. It looks like I may need an alignment, too. Hopefully that takes care of it. I have to almost come to complete stop as well and then give the steering wheel a good jerk and it frees up, so it sounds like my problem is the same as yours was. Hopefully this will take care of it.

I've seen the track bar loops stretch, so even if you change the bushings it may not help. 99% of the time it the bushings just like wyldstallyn73 said.
