i have a problem with my 3 speed grinding.it happens anytime i shift into second.especially when downshifting.it also grinds when shifting into first after the truck has been idling in neutral.can i rebuild this tranny myself?how do i check the fluid level,it is forty years old and probably needs changing.what kind of fluid does it take?what kind of auto trans are available for 292?where could i find one?
mine grinds into second & sometimes wont even go. I got someone to watch the clutch and it slides sideways before turning. it's barely clutching even when it's all the way to the floor. i haven't had time to look at it but could I put a spacer on the end so it wont slide or is there some reason why it's doing this?
No i wasn't trying to cut you down i've had people ask then i found out they have only driven this a few times and it's there frist truck..............
If your clutch compnents and/or your shift linkage components are worn out our misadjusted, you will get clashing gears also.
First gear is not synchronized, so it will grind if the truck is even slightly rolling. If second is clashing, but third is not, I would check the clutch and linkage out.
Before you spend time and money on expensive and difficult transmission repairs, make sure everything else is in correct working order.
This includes the clutch adjustments (make sure it is not worn out), properly functioning Z-bar, proper transmission lube and fill, tight linkage and the like.
Good luck!
thanks fbp,i did read the other post i just haven`t replied yet.could you tell me where the vent hole is at so i can check it.what else do i need to do?do i need to change the fluid?does it have a filter?what kind of fluid do i use?
Handx: There will be a square plug on the side of the transmission. Unscrew it, and stick your little finder inside. If you can touch fluid with the tip of your finger, it is full enough.
To change it, unscrew the plug on the bottom, and drain it. To fill it, use 80-90W gear oil, and you will find a pumper VERY useful. Fill it until it just comes to the top of the fill hole in the side.
Hope this helps!
