I have a 99 Ranger. The bed of my truck was never equipt with a bedliner, and until i do get a bedliner or cover, i'd like to make it look a little bit better. It is full of black marks and dents. I really don't mind the dents too much, so i was thinking if i could harm anything if i just spray paint the inside white, to match the truck. Would spray painting the inside hurt anything seeing that i'm going to eventually get a spray in bedliner? And the reason i havent done that yet is because of the lack of money i am making. Thanks,
Phil~
It won't hurt it. You'll need to clean & degrease it before you paint it. A light "scuff" sanding would help alot too. You wouldn't want the second coat of paint to peel after you install the spray-in bed liner.
Try a spray can of engine degreaser. I have a small sand blaster especially for light jobs. There's some stuff called something like paint etcher that supposedly roughs up the surface to promote adhesion. Check in with the guys on the Paint & Bodywork forum. I never did like doing body work myself.
A quick wash will make it easier for 1 can of degreaser to do the job.
If you have a compressor, blow out the bed after it's washed to make sure that all the water is out of the corners & little hiding spots.
P.S. Coin car washes are good too.
Instead of painting it to match the bed, you should try that paint in bed liner by Duplicolor that they sell at Wal-Mart. You'll need quite a bit of the liner and the texture kit they sell. It worked pretty well in my old Toyota. Almost looked like a Rhino spray in...almost.
if your gonna paint it you have to make sure you use a good paint and do the prep very well.... i did a similar thing in my dually and when i got the LINE-X put on, it held great for about 2 months then it would pull off witht the paint that didnt stick well enough to the bed itself....
Okay, i was browsing the auto section in Walmart today and picked up a couple things.
1. Truck bed liner paint. It's white with blackish/greyish speckles. I got one 16.5 oz can, but after reading the back, it says six cans for a Ranger depending on how many coats i want, texture, and thickness.
2. One quart of acetone.
3. 320 grit sand paper. (Painting instructions say 400, but this was the closest i could get)
The preperation on the back of the paint pretty much says, spray out inside of bed, dry thoroughly, sand all areas to be painted, and wipe with acetone to remove sanding residue.
So this is what i will be doing, in this order. For sanding i will be using a palm sander and i will be masking off the edges of the bed where i don't want paint. I was just curious if anyone had any comments or advice?
Would a palm sander be narrow enough to fit between the grooves in the bed? I just got one of those 3M abbrasive painting pads and used it to sand down the bed by standing on the pad and pushing it around with my foot.
