Welcome to the forum ladyrebecca, there are a lot of straight shooters here. If you're not certain about what your "mechanics" are recommending, run it past us. I'll help keep them honest!

We've had this discussion many times here. That's probably why Russ is a little excited. Basically with these FE motors, it's difficult to tell what you got with external ID numbers. It's easy to determine if you have an FE. But figuring out the actual engine displacement is a nother story. It really comes down to the crank ID. There are other ways to get an idea from the outside like BB mentioned. But these old trucks have typically seen rebuilds and replacements etc.
It's also hard to find a decent mechanic that knows anything about these FE motors. You'll find the guys here to be quite knowledgeable by comparison.
