ALL dairy is up in price right now. It DOES cost quite a bit to haul that heavy white stuff, but that's not the only reason. Besides, it was bound to go up eventually, I mean, come on, it was around $2/gallon 20 years ago. Just wait until people figure out that alot of soda is bad for them and start drinking more milk....
If I recall correctly, the Department of Agriculture gave dairy farmers a shot in the arm effective a few weeks ago. Raised the price they are guaranteed per gallon 50 cents. That plus increased fuel cost equals ouch! The people I really feel sorry for are Alaskans. They were already paying an arm and a leg for milk, at least in the more isolated areas.
At the risk of angering every dairy farmer in Western New York: why even buy it? It's been proven time and time again that only an infant really needs milk. Everything we've been taught for the past 80 years about the health benefits of milk has had one purpose: to help dairy farmers sell their product. And who do you think pays for all that wonderful "got milk?" advertising? YOU DO!! It's almost as bad as the local electric company spending advertising money to tell me how wonderful they are. BUT: God help anyone that ever criticizes the American Agriculture Industry. I'm sure to catch a lot of the standard "you'd-starve-if-it-weren't-for-farmers" flak. But doesn't most of this country's crops come from huge, corporate-owned farms? I always find it hard to feel sorry for a large corporation.
I drink only goat milk and i do absolutely no work. Friends of mine have dairy goats, they pastuerize it too. Theyre glad to give it away cause those little goats produce a lot of freakin milk!

Reason: goofed up
But who wants to milk a goat every morning just to enjoy their corn flakes?
Twice a day if you ain't got a kid (baby goat) sucking.
Because fresh unpasteurized unhomogenized milk taste much better than what you get from the store. And don't forget about cheeses, soaps, lotions, and other stuff you can make from it. It freezes well so you can have fresh milk from one goat year round.
With the proper sanitary conditions and healthy animals pasteurized milk is no safer to drink than unpasteurized. That bad bacteria gets in the milk AFTER it comes from the utter. if every is sanitary very little if any will get in the milk.
There is a shortage of dairy cows that was precipitated by the mad cow scare several months ago and this is the main reason for price increases, at least that's how my bosses explained it to me.

Because it is now socially unacceptable for me to put Budweiser on my Capt. Crunch in the morning..... Besides, I happen to really like my WHOLE milk. None of that unleaded garbage for me!

Are you a sports fan? Who do you think pays for all those wonderful, multi-million $$$ advertisements during the Super Bowl? Or the ridiculous cost of commercials for the last episode of 'Friends"? I could not care less about professional sports, nor most television shows, yet I am forced to subsidize these with the unnecessary (IMHO) added costs of advertising to products I buy. I'd stop buying to protest, except where do you start? My point is you can't just single out one product for advertising costs.......
As a woman, I need lots of calcium. Milk and icecream is the easiest to get it from. While everyone has been moaning about the gas prices these last few weeks, I was grumbling about my icecream going up in price.
Oh and men shouldn't drink soy milk, if they want to stay men. Just recently read a medical report about that. Something about female hormones? I can't exactly remember.
