Timing/7.3

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to re-set the timing after pulling injection pump & upper gear without having to pull front cover off? (7.3 diesel, 1988) Thanks in advance for any help--Rickkk

I would mark the gears before pulling them. I'd also mark where the IP timing mark was sitting on the Ip gear housing.

There should be paint marks on the gears that drive the pump. Move the crank around and watch the timing mark on the damper and then you can watch for the painted marks on the drive gear. Match the paint on the drive gear to the mark on the pump drive and you are good to go. Take the drive gear off the pump, its easier to handle that way.

Thanks bilder12,I have broken it down & had to buy reman heads...ouch..at any rate I removed the engine front cover,my problem is not so much the timimg marks, but how to go about setting the pump gear in correct time with cam after the front cover is in place? I will only be able to see the top of the cam gear! Thanks in advance...Rickkk

I just set the gear on top and let it sit there until I cover it with the pump mount housing. Also you can brake clean the top of the gear and paint the two teeth next to the "Y" so they can be seen from above. Then just put the gear in anytime.
