helped my buddy put headers on his rebuilt 351W in a mustang....well, on the way to the muffler shop he noticed a drop in oil pressure. then, a HORRIBLE rod knock started.
this was a supposedly rebuilt engine that was sitting for some time in someone's garage. it was clean on the inside and you could tell it was a fresh bore job....anyway, before we started it, it was primed and had oil pressure, and the top of the engine was oiling at first crank up. so we put the valve covers on and it started right up. and had oil pressure, so off to the muffler shop we go and you know the rest.
i do beleive we have one roasty toasty 351W. Well, now i have to return the 289 i was going to build, so we can put his mustang back on the road.
oh well, anyone in south central texas have a 289/302 that is just taking up space?
That sux. Good luck finding a new engine. Check the classified section on www.corral.net/forums under windsor parts, seems there is a few posts by your fellow texans, they aren't usually free but they are fairly cost effective. Are you sure its not a spun main bearing and not a rod? Later
not sure of anything, except the fact that the engine is not alive and well. when i pulled the valve cover off, there was no oil this time. i guess this is the risk you take when you don't assemble something yourself.
this morning my friend decided he wants to stick with the 351W. which is fine by me. the 'stang will be wicked once we put the 351 togther right. also, i get to keep the 289.
you should allow plenty of breakin before running it like that. the rings need time to seat. good luck with this next build hopfully no damage was done.
went over to my friend's house (the 351 mustang guy). anywho, pulled the oil pan off and low and behold, the oil pump was held in w/only 1 thread of one bolt and the pick up was sitting on the bottom of the sump.
fixed that, and the windsor lives. btw, pulled the rod caps and only had to replace one bearing.
started it up, runs amazingly better with oil pressure. gonna' change the oil again after running it just long enough to reset timing.
