Gear question

I have a 90 XLT and I am about 99% sure someone has put 2.35 gears in the rig, though I can't fathom why. I plan on upgrading to 4.10 because I am also planning on going from my small 31" tire to a little bigger 33" tire. My question is, when I put the new rear end in, how much of a difference will I notice off the line? Right now it is ok but nothing like I would expect from the V8 under the hood. What kind of a power increase (if any) will I have? And how hard is it to change the gears? Is it something that a new person can learn quickly or is it best left alone to someone who does this everyday?

Thanks in advance for the info...

Well how did you determine 2.35? If you do in fact have 2.35 (I highly doubt), and you swap to 4.10s, you will think you have bought a hot rod. Off the line, it should tromp. You will probably run about 2500rpms@65 with those gears and tires (But thats a guestimation...). You wont have any physical power increase with a gear swap, but the perceived power (aka 'seat of the pants') will be very pronounced. Gears are not something a first timer should try. If every shim and angle isnt perfect, you will grenade that new rear and front end.

I figured it out by using the charts for tire size and rpm to figure out the gear ratio. Then I did the easy thing, jacked er up and turned the tire and counted the rotations of the driveshaft. I can't beieve it either that it has em but it does.

well some came with 3.08's and the majority had 3.55. remember your not running stock size tires so your calculations could be off.

about doing the gearswap yourself, not a good idea. to much involved , but thats why they make the big bucks doing the work. If you had a couple axles to practice on then i would say sure.
