I wanted to know which power steering pump to use with a rack and pinion unit. The engine is ford but I am not sure if any pump will work with the rack. Thanks in advance.
I am using a 1989 mustang P/S pump on my 59 that has a ford mustang R & P unit. I have been told that most of the older ford and chevy pumps are similar in pressure output. Some of the street rod vendors sell an adjustable regulator to drop the pressure to the rack, if it is too sensitive. They also sell hose kits to hook up the pump to the rack. If you are using a mustang rack, they have two types of fittings, with or without o-rings. Probably the biggest hassle is getting the right brackets and pulleys to get everything lined up right. I ended up going with a high-dollar march setup. Hope this helps.

How did you mount the Mustang R & P? Did you use the Mustang suspension or did you adapt the R & P to the stock 59 suspension?
I used a mustang II style supension kit from street rod engineering, with tubular control arms and disc brakes. The R & P is mounted to the new crossmember. I have not seen a R & P adapted to a stock axle. I have heard of of people trying to do this, but I don't know how succesful they were. I don't know if there any kits made to do this. If it is possible to do this, it would be a lot less work (and money) than installing the mustang style suspension.

I have a chevy pump for my 84 t-bird rack and it works ok chevy pump are said to put out a little too much pressure. I would guess that any ford pump that you can get the belt to line up and easy to mount will work. Ed ke6bnl
I plant to go to the 4th sat car show in Quartz Hill this saturday evening are you going to be there Ed
Ke6bnl, hate to say it but where is the car show? I dont get out much as I work night crew for stater bros and go to college during the day. I will go if I can find out where it is before sat night.
Jcraft, which motor do you have? I have a 302 with pulleys but they are v-belt, are yours the same or serpentine as you have an 89 pump.

I have seen this done but it is not a good idea. A rack and pinion was designed to be attached to a crossmember. When attached to an axle it moves up and down with the axle and creates bump steer...
I think the bigger problem would be allowing for the relative movement between the axle mounted rack and body mounted steering column as the suspension moves through its range. bumpsteer shouldn't be a problem because the rack and steering arms don't move relative to each other as the axle goes over a bump.
I am running a 351W in my truck. I am using a single serpentine belt with a reverse rotation water pump, Sanden 505 A/C compressor, and a 3G alternator.
