Powerstroke Guru's......

Here goes: What could be the problem with a '96 powerstroke that runs like an absolute dog when cold but when it warms up it runs like it should. When this engine is cold it can hardly get out of it's own way. No black smoke or anything just really weak. After 4-5 miles it warms up and runs as good as anyother stock powerstroke does. Anyone have any ideas???? Thanks.

Sounds like the EBV(exhast backpressure valve)on the turbo may be sticking closed too much.

This keeps the turbo from working, I suppose?? Can this correct itself or get better as the engine warms up? The truck runs really well after it warms up.

I second that its the ebv, it restricts the exhaust flow severely, in fact so much that some people use it as an exhaust brake( just dont tell ford ).
on cold days mine stays on for a little while , even after 5-6 miles it will still come on until the oil temp reaches 160-180 degrees.
under a heavy foot though it should open and give you power.
at least mine does

You can put your foot through the floor and it's still a dog. Is this EBV something I should replace or is it electronically controlled and something in the sensors/computer should be replaced to make it open properly? Would a Diablo or Superchip change this opening/closing? How do I fix this thing? Any ideas?

Thanks for everyone's help so far. It's been great.

If the exhaust back pressure device is malfunctioning it should either give a check engine light or store the appropriate code in the computer. Have someone retrive the codes from the computer and see if there is one stored for the back pressure device. It could be that the EBP sensor on the front of the engine is not sending the appropriate signal back to the computer causing it to stay on too long. On the other hand, it could be doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
The back pressure device is there to speed the warm up time for the purpose of getting warm air out of the heater faster.
