I've got a question for you all. I have a 2002 F250. Lately, whenever I back up and turn the wheel to the left, I hear a loud thunk in the front end. It's more towards the passenger side. I have checked everything. What is funny about this is that my last 2 Mustangs did the same thing. 1 still does. Is this just a typical Ford noise? The sound is definetely coming from the suspension. Yet, nobody knows what it could be after looking at both the Mustang and the truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Double check ball joints. I had a "thunk" in mine, went through state insp. then had the truck aligned at the dealership. One week later i checked them and was "very afraid" to drive 3 miles to a shop. The guy said they were ready to fall off. But, he said that they lock into a position and stay for awhile, then loosen up and make noise. Sometimes they are really hard to find. They are replaced now and everything is quiet. Good Luck with it.
It may just be coinceidence when it is happening but there was a thread related to this thud sound and someone said it was the a/c door shutting or opening. I don't remember exactly but I have the same sound in my truck now and I also had it in my 98 Chevy. Oh and my 95 Dodge does it when I shut the door.
Check your slip joints, trac bar bracket, shocks, swaybar links
No, its a 2 wheel drive. I have looked at everything that may not be installed correctly or loose, but every single fitting and bracket looks to be in place. I.E., no worn metal or abnormal marks anywhere. I'll do some more checking on what you have mentioned, but it just seems weird that I have had 3 Fords do the same thing. The other 2 I had were 4X4, so they had torsion bars, hmmmm.
My 2WD makes that noise too. I figured out that it is a lack of lubrication on (in) the swaybar bushings. When the wheels turn, the sway bar moves sideways in the bushings mounted bellow the radiator. When there isn't any (or enough) lubrication, the bar binds and at some point overcomes the friction and slams against the brackets. This happens a lot after I drive in deep water or in heavy rain where lubricant gets washed away by water splashing from the wheels. I lubricated it with silicone and it hasn't done it since. I spray some in the bushing and then grab the sway bar and push it back and forth to get the silicone in there, spray again a couple of times and repeat for the other side. Wheew! I thought I might have to trade in my truck on a Dodge for a while.
ps. Don't use grease though!
my early 99 4x4 had a clunk, turns out it was the sway bar links. The bushings were shot. I have since then just removed the front sway bar and its quiet
I had the same noise it was no grease in the front joints.I had to put almost a tube and a half of grease in em. You think that would be an easy check point but .......
