Question Glow Plug Relay

Will the newer style glow plug relay, the one without the box and the "ribbon metal", work in place of the older style, the one that does have the box and the "ribbon" on it? The newer one is much cheaper.

If you mean the one for the Powerstroke then I doubt it, they are 115 volt glow plugs.

In some parts listings I have seen one listed for 91 and older and one listed for 91 and newer. The one for the older one shows to have the box with the metal strap attached to the terminals. The one for the newer ones is just the relay.

Hmmm that is a new one on me, the only one i have ever seen is the older style then, I actually have no idea what the strap is for anyway, i thought it was supposed to drop the voltage but when i tested it there was no diff over normal wire, so you could try talking to the local Navistar dealer unless somebody else has any ideas on that.

I've seen the same controller on 94 factory turbos clear down to my 87 6.9. Not sure what listing you found.

I think he is looking at the relay for the 83 to 86 6.9. No box, no ribbon.

If you have a manual glow plug system you can use a regular Ford starter solenoid for the relay.
