emissions equipment
Well, my '79 is very close to going down the raod under it's own power. For many reasons, I've decided to leave the remains of the emissions equipment off the engine. My question is this: What is the bare minimum needed for the engine to run? I have the EGR spacer on it, should I connect manifold vacuum to it? I plugged many of the ports on the intake with pipe plugs. For now, the heater hoses have been replaced with a short hose connecting the two ports together. The air pump is a locked-up pile of rust on the floor. It's got open headers right now, but when I start it, it'll pop through the carb pretty bad (I haven't timed it yet).
I'm not concerned with passing tests right now (but I will be in a year or two)....I just need to make 'er run OK.
Thanks!
You can set initial time on most aps by turning the engine till the timing mark lines up to about 12 btdc. (with no. 1 cylinder at tdc.)Pull the coil wire out of the dizzy and hold it close to ground. With the ign. on turn the dizzy untill you get a spark. Or a serious shock!
The bare minimum is spark port/ported vacuum to vacuum advance (stock distributor). (Well, vacuum to brake booster if you want power brakes, and vacuum to the transmission if you'd like it to shift normally.) Make sure you block off the air injection port too. Cap the cannister purge port on top of the carb too.
