Carb/timing issues
The truck has always pinged slightly...only when cruising at highway speeds when the throttle is lightly feathered it will ping. When I first got the truck, it would also diesel so I assumed it was due to carbon buildup. I ran a couple cans of Amsol Power Foam through the carb and the dieseling went away but the ping is still there. I knocked the distributor loose and retarded the timing just a touch. The ping still was there and the truck didn't run well nor idle well...so I put the timing back. Any ideas here?
Also, the truck runs fantastic when cold but once warm the idle quality falls off and sounds and smells like it is loading up...throttle response falls also off the line and will sometime sputter . Once over 15-1800 rpm it runs fine..just right of the line it poops out. Any ideas here? The truck has a 600 cmf Holly 4bbl and Eldelbrock aluminum intake on top of the 390. I am used to tuning 2 stroke dirt bike carbs...not big 4bbl's....is there a way to lean out the idle slightly? I am pretty sure the choke isn't sticking but will check again...thanks!
