Ok, here i go again. Thanks to all those who have helped in the past. I bought a used 2001 F350 PSD w/118,000mi. on it. Just before i bought it, they said they had it in the shop because it would not start. Over a $1000 later, it was some sort of sensor leaking or something. I've put only about 800 mi. since i bought it(mostly on a trip to Pismo Beach last weekend. Anyways, i went to start it this afternoon and it started right away, ran for about 30 seconds or so and shut down. Numerous tries after that it only wanted to start one more time, and shut down after about 3 seconds. Any tips or advice would be appreciated. I have no warrenty, but i think the guys i got it from are going to help if they can.
CMP Sensor stands for CaMshaft Position Sensor. It often irratically shuts down the engine until it finally dies. It does not always throw a code and the engine turns over fine, but won't start.
I have a 2000 250 7.3 and had a similar issue. Initially, the engine seemed to be starving for fuel and would only run at idle and slightly above. But by 1500 RPM it would start to die. Eventually it simply wouldn't start any more. This happened in Winter and I assumed gelled fuel, but that wasn't it. They replaced a part called the IDM which has something to do with sending the information about how much fuel to put into the engin, and the crank sensor. I haven't had a problem since then.
A friend of mine had the same problem with his not to long ago, his is an 03 with the 7.3. It was a faulty wiring harness, it seems it caused a bad signal from one of the oil pumps, and that made the computer think there was no or low oil pressure, which caused the engine to shut down. Ford replaced the harness under warentee and he has not had a problem since.
There was a code. That is how the mechanic decided that the Crank Sensor and the IDM were the problem, but I was never told what the code was. I just know that I paid 90 dollars for them to use the damned computer to find out that code.
Thanks guys, its getting picked up and going back to the dealer on Monday, the same place that diagnosed and replaced a wiring harness and cracked gasket somewhere that was telling the engine not to start. The people i bought it from said they spent $1700 on it. Does that sound high? Also, every day it will start the first time, and then shut down after about 30 to 60 seconds, then will only turn over after that.
Well, got truck back today. I don't know exactly what sensor it was this time(i think it was one of the things that was mentioned on this thread) but do know it was worth $472.00, maybe has gold in it or something. I'll report actual repair when i get a copy of the bill. The guy i bought it from offered to pay half. Diff. sublect now. Anyone want to buy a K&N filter for 2001 psd? ha ha
If the part they replaced was the CMP Sensor they took you to the cleaners. Even Ford charges less than $200 for the part (less than $100 from International) and it's a 15 minute swap assuming the bolt isn't rounded off.
Ok, got a copy of the bill today and it was the CMP sensor. A break down of the bill was parts-$206.72, labor mechanical-$247.50, + Calif. tax. Did i get taken to the cleaners? I got another invoice from the guy i bought it off of of work he had done just before he sold it to me because it would not start. It is very diifficult to read but maybe i can give enough info to see if that price was high too. Damaged injector glow plug harness, failed IDM valve cover and replace right valve cover gasket, there was atotal of three parts-$566.67,$50.43,$62.74. Labor mechanical came to $825.00 for a total of 1504.84. What do you guys think of that? Looks like all this almost all this stuff was covered in this thread, hope it can help someone else.
