I have a '99 F250 diesel with 83,000 miles on it. I haul horses with it on weekends. I had in it for brakes last week. When I picked it up they told me that the torque converter in the transmission needed to be replaced for approx. $900. They explained that the rattle (that I had not noticed) was the converter. They went on to explain that it wouldn't leave me stranded but I needed to get it done someday. I spoke to a mechanic who worked for Ford for 15 years who now has his own garage. He didn't hear my truck but claims that he has never heard of having to replace this. Has anyone out replaced it? Is this a common problem? thanks!
Sadly, having to replace the torque converter on a Ford truck with PSD is an all too common problem. The one used by the factory seems marginal when it comes to handling the torque of the PSD. Diesels that have been "chipped" can expect to replace it sooner rather than later.
My 99 has been making that rattling/ringing sound for a long time. I was told the TC needed replacement to but I was quoted a little over $600 at my local dealer. Since mine's got nearly 190,000 on the odometer I thought about waiting to get one of those fabled BTS transmissions
Wow! 190,000 mi. I thought I was doing good at 116. I hear the same noises though, and wondering if replacement with stock TC would be good enough to make it another 100k mi.....

190,000 is nothing for these trucks and mine is still running with the original trans. I've been told that the sound we are hearing will eventually grenade the tranny. I may get mine done soon; that sound worries the **** out of me.
I was quoted $370.98 for the TC, $762 for install. Anyone know a link to good instructions for this procedure? I value my arms and legs, $762 is just too much.
