I'm pretty sure the manual says 3. Regardless if it is three or four, I have heard that driving around with under three gallons of fuel in the tank doesn't allow the fuel pump to cool itself, resulting in overheating of the pump which reduces the lifespan of it. I know plenty of people who have burned out fuel pumps when the tank got low. Makes garages lots of money 400 on mothers escort, 800 on coworkes saab and so on. Mechanic freind tells me best to keep it over 1/8. Many people think they ran out of gas and had already burned the pump. He says they are either 1.5 gallons in tank or full after problem starts. average gas can of pushed it to gas pump and filled it.
