transmission question/ c-6

i bought a 82 bronco 302, it runs awesome and is in top shape it has 160000 on it factory paint still shines. sweet 82. well any way when the truck is cold it does not want to go into drive, but it goes right into rev. if i rev it it will go. it only does this when it cold,no slippage or anyother signs of a bad tranny. when it is warm no probs at all. any ideas please help. hope it is simple oh i changed the fluid and filter already.

Slippage when cold is usually indicative of a worn transmission, theres just enough excessive clearances inside the tranny that it will slip, but due to heat expansion when things warm up, it works fine (however, an excessive load on it would probably cause slippage, even when warm) for now if it seems to drive fine when warm, you should be ok, but you will probably need to overhaul the tranny eventually. How soon will likely depend on how hard you drive it.

about what is the normal cost to rebuild the c-6? in the truck and out of the truck. is it difficult? should a proffessional do it?i am able to build a motor but never fooled with a tranny besides swapping them.
