Have run into this about 3 times in the last couple months. While cranking the starter, it seems the timing advances and almost stops the starter, then the engine fires and seems to run ok. Just wondering if the computer or crank sensor is getting ready to take a dump. Anyone have any experience on this one?
Well this is just what I went through on my 96 explorer w/86000.
Starter went. (went through the same scenario as you described). Took about a week for it to fail completely. Wrecked the flywheel. Installed a new starter but by the time I drove the truck to the automotive shop with the new starter, the now hosed flywheel wrecked the new starter and so both needed to be replaced. Starter was $135.00 with warranty. Flywheel was approx $100.00 and Labor was 480.00 to drop the transmission.
