Cruise control

While pulling my trailer for the first time(approx 6000lbs), my 2001 F350 PSD 4x4 was on cruise control climbling a grade, reving pretty high for a few minutes, the cruise control shut off by itself. It did the exact same thing onj the way home. Is this normal?

Your cruise control will shut off if the truck speed drops more than 5 (?) MPH from where in is set. IM not sure about the 5MPH number, but I think I remember reading that number. The PSD with 6000lb trailer should have had no problem with any hill. One of the PSD guys should know the answer to the rest of your question.

ANY hill can give you issues with too much load (load including wind drag !)
and cruise is probably the least efficient method as far as fuelage a lot of hills...

what I do if I'm using cruise in the hills (which I do a lot) is anticipate the size of the hill and either accelerate on the downslope or the flat BEFORE the hill and let the momentum carry over the hill...it just takes a light touch if not fighting the load AND the hill... but is infinitely easier on your engine

It takes a LOT less throttle on the flats and downhill than going uphill...

You probably noticed the coasting downhill and then the HARD acceleration uphill...
but if you didn't get the hard acceleration out of the engine before it cut off on the uphill, it may be that you have a cruise control proble as well....

yeah cruise will kick out if there is enough load on a hill. Just this weekend I towed my 8,000# trailer with my gas 250 460. With cruise it would keep running fine in OD on gentle hills. It would downshift on heavier hills. And if the truck couldn't maintain the cruise setting it shut off.

It's normal if this is what is happening with you.
