Exclamation Tranny????

It is REALLY weird. When we go in the morning the car sometimes will want to accelerate and other times not. But it gets even worse because sometimes when I pull out of a parking lot it won't accelerate or when I get on the highway to work some times it will and sometimes it wont so I forget about passing Also I get really bad gas mileage (14 mpg) Is this usual for a 1990 4x4 Extended???

Thanks!

Welcome to the Aerostar forum on FTE.

No, this is not the usual operation for what should be a 4.0L engine. There are at least a half dozen things that could be affecting your performance but it would be helpful to have more details before attempting to run down this problem. Has this started just recently or is it a long term situation? What, if any, repairs have been attempted to date? What is the ownership and maintenance history of the van? With the poor mileage, do you also notice any smoke from the exhaust when you try to accelerate? Does this intermittent no-acceleration mode come and go on a regular basis? Does it happen when the engine is cold, hot or both? Lastly, how would you rate your mechanical skills if repairs are needed?

Answers to these questions will help others on this board more quickly pinpoint your problem and get your van running strong again.
