I have a 1999 250SD 7.3PSD that I use to pull a 10,000#
RV 5th wheel. I plan to do a lot of pulling in the mountains
and would like chip recommendations.
Is it a good idea to chip?
What chip is recommended for my type of pulling?
What are the benefits and/or difficulties?
Most chips for towing are in the 50-75hp range. I've heard good things about Diablo as well as others. If you get a chip, GET a pyrometer to monitor your exhaust temps or you could melt your engine.

Will be very interested in what you decide.. I too, pull a large 5th wheel, and tend to migrate to the mountains. I have a 6-spd tranny, which may or may not help with a chip.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Jan-02 AT 11:32 PM (EST)]I have a 2000 f-350 tow truck and i use the hyper-tech power programer. It even firms up you shifts. Real easy to use and unbelievable amount of power. I then put an exhaust on it wow. It will spin the tires and the truck weighs in at about 7500lbs. Even increased my fuel mileage.
Ken has answers to the questions, and the chips, HERE on this site. What is it with you guys, wanting to send people to other sites? I am glad to help anyone out, but I don't send them to another site when the caliber of people, and help, we have available right here on this site. I don't want to offend anyone but, if you belong to a site I don't see the rational reason to send someone to another site if the info is available here. JMHO.

PS. I'm sorry, I just noticed that you are not a member of this site. I guess that explains it.
Go to the diesel site and put in a plug for a site that competes against a supporting vendor and watch how quickly the post gets yanked.... been tempted to do that more than once but instead I just reply with a pitch for FTE.
Hell, we're not perfect, no vendor is, but we do try (though sometimes I probably shoot myself in the foot) and it seems to be working: Had another record month for site visitors.... :-)

Kinda harsh eh, Jim? Statments like that surely can't increase membership. I understand your position but cut him some slack. We're suppose to be helping to BUILD FTE and that starts with edifying all users.
I just had a BullDog 60 HP Chip installed in my 2001 F-350 its like I had new engine installed. If your going to pull a 5th wheel of that weight I think you might had to do something with your exhaust system. I had mind installed at the BullDog Shop in Pharr,TX here is ther toll free #(Admin note: sorry, you can recommend the product but please don't advertise here - I can't believe no one read what I just said)
just remember
anyone can sell a chip etc.
but experiance and knowledge are even better yet
Chips for PSDs tend to vary alot depending upon the pogrammer and the PCM code
just check out some of the other Diesel sites they have much much more info, more Diesel posts there in a a day than here in a week.
My advice is too look around and get all the info you can then spend the dollars.
They do very by PCM code, but NOT by programmer. Any programmer who tells you his Superchips or Diablo code is different or better than someone else's is lying! We all use the same codes provided by Diablo or Superchips. Boxes simply program codes available, they do not modify them.
As more and more 4-bank Diablo's become available, the variences by PCM code get less and less. One thing to note, Diablos tend to smoke more than Superchips at gear changes under heavy throttle. People who don't know the reason for this tend to dump on Diablo. The reason is the Diablos run richer under heavy throttle than the Superchips, keeping the exhaust cooler (yes, this does vary by PCM code).

Monsta;
You are correct, and I appoligize for being so harsh. It is not my intention to scare away any prospective members to this site. However as a member of this site I get offended when people come to this site knowing all that we have available here, and insist on refering to the other site. If a person could not get the information they needed here then I would be the first to recommend another site, however I would exaust all that was available here. I would not however send him to another site on his very first post. Again if I am being harsh I appoligize, I am very proud to be a member of this wonderful site. I would hope no one would take offence to my pride.
I also have A `99 super duty psd with A 3.73 auto with 70,000 miles. When home my truck is in the garage, so pulling my 30 ft fifth wheel is 12ft 2in. tall and weighs 10,500 lbs.is the only life it knows. I really cant speak of chips but I have never even considered it since this vehicle is all the truck I need to do the job. I have crisscrossed the country numerous times and have driven in all types of terrain. I have not once had problems pullng or holding back on any hills that I have encounteres. I pull at 70 mph and without headwinds get 10 1/2 mpg of fuel. I would recomend that you pull A while and see where you are! The other thing I suggest is that you keep your air filter checked!
