Yeah, I searched the forum, but only found "erratic speedometer" problems.
I lost my speedometer, odometer, and tripometer completely. So far, I've replaced the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). I'm going to check the voltage from the PCM as soon as I get ahold of a meter.
I had the same sort of problem on my 1995 Mazda B3000. It was the GEM (General Electric Module) Think thats what it stands for. Its behind the radio, real easy to change yerself. The part is darn expensive....

PINPOINT TEST H: SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER INOPERATIVE, RANGER AND EXPLORER
H1 CHECK CONNECTIONS
Verify connector is properly attached at speed sensor.
Are connections good and is drive tip seated properly?
Yes No
GO to H2 . SERVICE or REPLACE as necessary, RETEST system.
H2 CHECK ODOMETER/POINTER
Check operation of odometer/pointer.
Does the odometer operate and the speedometer pointer not operate?
Yes No
GO to H3 . REPLACE speedometer as described in Removal and Installation in this section. RECHECK speedometer for operation.
H3 CHECK SPEEDOMETER POINTER
Check operation of speedometer pointer.
Does the speedometer/pointer operate?
Yes No
GO to H4 . REPLACE speedometer as described in Removal and Installation in this section. RECHECK speedometer for operation.
H4 CHECK VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR
Disconnect speedometer connector from vehicle speed sensor and remove vehicle speed sensor and check that shaft in vehicle speed sensor turns freely.
Does shaft turn freely?
Yes No
GO to H5 . REPLACE vehicle speed sensor as described in Removal and Installation in this section. CHECK speedometer for operation.
H5 CHECK GEARS
Check drive gear for damage or wear.
Is drive gear damaged?
Yes No
REPLACE damaged or worn gear. CHECK speedometer for operation. System OK
When I saw your subject "I lost my Speedo" I wasn't sure if I wanted to open the thread or not. I didn't know what kind of picture I might see. Sorry I can't help.
Thanks guys... I'm starting to think that the little gear on the end of the speed sensor is the culprit... It looks ok, but the speedometer works until the car's been warmed up.
Bassguy, why not run his puppy by the likes of Advance Auto or Autozone, for a no cost computer scan, to see if maybe it can pinpoint something else for you to check. pawpaw
