Buying a 2001 PSD - Question

I am new to diesels and will be test driving a 2001 F250 PSD. It has 7500 miles on it. Is the anything in particular I should be looking for?

Thanks,

Keith

Buying a 2001 PSD - Question

Basically the truck you are going to test drive really isn't even broke in yet. Diesels take about 10,000 miles to loosen up and break in.

About the only thing to watch for is if you get vibration at an rpm of 2900 or above. There have been a few PSDs out there with this problem and Ford really doesn't have a fix for it yet.

You'll be paying out a lot of money for the truck. Find a mechanic familiar with diesels and pay him 20 or 30 bucks to take a quick look at it. Or whatever it costs. If you haven't ever been around them it could be money well spent.

Buying a 2001 PSD - Question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Jan-02 AT 10:16 AM (EST)]Keith, there is one potential problem with the PSD and that is
the CPS (cam position sensor). There are numerous reports of this part
going south and if it does the engine shuts down and will not start
untill the CPS is replaced. This seems to have been a problem for quite some time and so far the Ford Engineers cannot explain why this happens. While the replacement is covered under warranty there is no way to determine before hand when or even if it will go bad.
To circumvent the possibilty of being stranded in the outback a lot of us (PSD owners carry a spare CPS as insurance). Don't let this
prevent you from purchasing the best truck on the planet. Just be aware of
a potential "minor" problem.
I am currently on my 3rd PSD. An 01 F350 CC LB 3.73 Lariat w/Magnaflow
Turbo back exhaust, RS 9000's, tranny cooler w/aux fan, Banks Dynafacts EGT and Tranny temp gages.
Good advice to have a diesel mech go over before laying out hard earned cash. If given a clean bill of health, go for it, you won't be sorry

Fred

Check the coolant additive (SCA)right away and make sure it has the proper level of FW-16 in it.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Jan-02 AT 11:12 PM (EST)]You would be right and I would be wrong!! Sorry I DID have it backwards! International is owned by Navistar International Transportation Corporation. My apologies to those concerned. (I was jokingly trying to bust rescuepilots stones. OUCH my stones hurt now )

Monsta,
You test the SCA with test strips that you can get at International. They test for molybdate, nitrite and glycol freezepoint. I use the 3 way Fleetguard test strips # CC2602A. The proper amount of SCA is important to prevent cavitation.
