Clutch confusion
I have an ongoing problem with my t.o. bearing. first a little history; I bought the truck needing a new bearing.I have since replaced the clutch disc, pressure plate and t.o. bearing 3 times( the t.o. bearing x3) and can't get rid of the noise.I have learned from past post that there seems a variety of clutches that fit my engine-tranny combination.( I have a 66 f100 custom cab 352 with a t85n-1 trans). Is there any way to tell which :*Flywheel( i would like to replace)
*clutch disc 10.5 ",11" ...
*and t.o.bearing (i have seenlisted as reg, 10" long, and 11" long)
belong in my truck. thanx for any help!

.My father and I have had it completely apart to replace the bearings. The overdrive unit has not worked since I owned the truck but I'm eager to get it working, especially with gas prices these days!!! I'm not sure we put it back together correctly during the rebuild however the truck runs great, goes thru all the gears fine , only noise is the t.o. bearing. The in the cab overdrive handle is not able to engage the lever which activates the unit( handle moves in and out, lever on trans does not move) but I am able to move the lever on the trans by hand. The electrical has been completely disconnected but all the parts apear to be there. I saw your post concerning this tranny and there was another site on the web that had a good diagram of the electrical( I can't think of the name of the site but it had something to do with "burbs"). Anyway I'm rambling, my priority right now is the t.o. bearing before I get stranded.I'll keep ya'll informed with my progress. Thanx also to Barry for the response.
There is also a pilot bushing in the rear of the crank to support the input shaft of the tranny. Did you replace it as well? You can use a bushing or use a bearing avalable in the help section of most parts stores (ask the clerk if you don't see it).
On a side note, I had a really noisy sqealing sound under my truck and replaced the clutch, PP, TO, Pilot bushing as well but the noise would still persist. I was at my wits end. Then all of a sudden while standing in front of the truck with the hood open, I looked down and looked at my alternator belt. It seemed to be slipping. I stopped the engine, tightened the belt, and the annoying squeal was gone!
All I'm saying is depending on the noise, it may not be what you think it is.
I was unable to get the old pilot bearing out when I replaced the old cluth. I geuss that could be where the noise is coming from. The reason I thought it was the t.o. bearing is the noise is related to pressing and releasing the clutch. The confusing part to me is that the noise is intermittant and does not have a pattern to it. Some days the noise is there , some days I can go thru several gear changes with out noise. It does seem to happen more often at low speeds ie. backing up, taking off in 1st, pulling into parking spaces ... However I do have a flex fan and a fairly loud exhaust at speed so it could be drowning out the noise.

Its kind of between a whine and grinding, hard to describe, sometimes when I push the clutch in and the noise starts, if I leave the clutch in the noise tends to slow down and get quieter( but not always, wierd huh?). I also had my brother push the clutch in and out while I located the source , so I'm certain its coming from the area between the engine and trans!

To get out a bad pilot bushing heres a common way.
Use a 1/2 x20 tap with a BB glued to the end in the contersunk hole. just thread the pilot and keep turning it will push right out.
Some guys use the wonder bread method. fold a slice of bread in to the hole take a punch or old bolt and push it in untill it full then hit the bread with the bolt and a hammer the compresion of the bread will pop it out. you can use grease too but thats messy.

all the internal bearings of the trans were replaced during the rebuild, not sure what all the names are input shaft etc. but all the bearings " inside the trans were replaced. The bearings were bad when I bought the truck and this noise is very different from that. For one thing it is intermittant. When the bearings went bad the noise was constant, also there was no noise sitting at idle in neutral. I geuss I should mention the synchros, and all seals were also replaced. Like i mentioned the trans shifts and works great.( except for the o.d.). The noise is diffinatly(99% sure) related to the clutchor its related components becuase I only here it as the clutch is pushed in or let out. No noise idling in nuetral, no noise ( as best I can tell) going down the road.
