93 Explorer Check engine light?

OK my 93 Ford Explorer check engine light pops on after anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes of driving it down the road. A while back when this rig was at the shop the mechanic said the reason is because my EGR, or ERG valve is stuck either open or closed. It’s the little diaphragm-looking can on the driver’s side of the plenum with a pipe that runs down into the exhaust manifold. What does this device do and should I replace it with a working one? I was told that this may give me better fuel mileage so that’s why I ask with case priced being $2.36 a gal around here.

Thanks,
Brad

EGR recirculates exhaust gasses back into the intake manifold for better emissions and fuel economy. The engine check light comes on when the engine is wormed up and the EGR system is suppose to kick in. Try to pull codes and make sure that it's the EGR system. If it is, 99% of times it is the DPFE sensor, which controls the valve, rather then the valve itself. Easy fix, ~$80 at parts store, takes about 1.5 min. Let me know if you need more info.

Ok, thats some very usefull info, I will check that for sure. I want to get the MPG up on this Explorer to where it should be, right now I am lucky if I can get 14 on the highway. I have also done some reading on here and lots of people say to clean the EGR with some break cleaner. I think the 4.0 auto should be getting at least 18mph in this 4 door model?

fixing EGR won't improve your gas mileage very much. I would try air filter, plugs and O2 sensors. I get around 17mpg on '95 4.0L, 4 door.

Yeah, I have a K&N that could probally use a good cleaning and the plugs and wires are fairly new. I also think that my Cats may be pluged so they will need to go. I live in a county were there are no emmisions checks. The MAF sensor could use a cleaning too I would imagine.
