I changed the flywheel on my 84 f150. It has a 351w. and what looks by the tranny pan a c6 transmission. I bought it off a guy that was having serious starter trouble. I dont think the tranny and engine match. The flywheel was missing 3 teeth and it looked like the starter was only making contact with the very top of the flywheel. My auto parts guy said there was only 1 flywheel for the engine. I put it all back together and now the engine won't turn over, even with a socket on the balancer pulley. I took it back apart, made sure the torque converter was locked all the way in and spinning. I turned the engine by hand on the flywheel but when I put the tranny back up I cant get it to turn to put the other torque converter bolts back on.
It was running when I bought it. The missing flywheel teeth were making a very bad racket and when it stopped on the missing teeth i had to turn it by hand to get it to start.
Anybody that can help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like the torque is still not all the way in.
you may have damaged the front pump the first time you put it together.
will the torque turn with the engine seperated?
will the engine turn when they are seperated?
i always run my fingers beside the torque when i put one back in. if they will go behind the torque, it is not all the way in.
When I backed it off I kept spinning the torque until it clicked in and it seemed to be seated all the way but I can't remember if I could fit my fingers in. It spun around pretty freely.
The engine turned over by hand until I put the tranny back.
If the pump was damaged would it lock it up like this?
Thanks. It looks like I may have to take it back off again.
another question. Can I put in an inline 6 using the V8 motor mounts and driveshaft?

The convertor should click in about 3x's not just once ans yes in will bind and it will crack the front pump. If you could not turn the convertor by hand when bolting it up then it was not seated!
TimMills, I too have a nasty starter problem with my truck. I have an 83' F150 4x4 with the 351W. I too, changed the flywheel out however I had no problem. After 8 starters and a new flywheel, I still have the problem. When I put a new starter on, it works fine for a few days, then it starts grinding, and gets progressively worse. Now, usually if I remove the starter and put it right back on the problem temporarily goes away. I have determined that the root cause of the problem is: a previous owner, moron extordinaire, put a floor jack under the bell housing of the tranny and jacked it up as far as it would go. Thus, the bell housing is now slightly out of round and the starter bolt holes are no longer true. This is evident by the fiberglass patchwork the fella did to the bottom of the bell housing. With the starter bolts being ever so slightly mis-aligned the bendix and flywheel no longer match up correctly. The only answer is a complete new tranny.
john luther... would it be possible to put new starter holes in ur tranny, you could backfill the old ones with a welder, then use another tranny as a template for ur hole spacing. drill the new holes and thread them with a tap and die set. it would be a lot of work, and i am not so sure if it would even work, but it might be worth a shot over a new tranny. (yes i know it's prob a stupid idea, but hey it might be worth a shot)
I have a 1980 F150 that was doing the exact same thing. i tried different starters from every parts house for 302 and 351 ( i have a 302 by the way) so after a dozen starters and two flywheels later, I found out there is a company that makes a $12 starter shim for fords. I had to order it from Michigan but its been 3 months and no more grinding.
A purchased starter shim may work for John Luther and maybe not. I once dropped a C6 housing, (yeah, a case of the spaz) did not notice that I had bent the starter bell until I had rebuilt the tranny and installed it. (Another case of not paying attention). I had to make my own shims because it would be fine until it got hot then would grind to start. I finally got it right but was a pain in the bum.
